Grandfather Speaks Out After Three Teens Are Killed During Home Break-In
The grandfather of one of three teenagers killed during a home invasion in Wagoner County, Oklahoma, spoke publicly about the incident, saying the young men made a terrible decision but did not deserve to lose their lives.
Leroy Schumacher was the grandfather of 17-year-old Jacob Redfearn. He acknowledged that his grandson and the other teenagers understood they could face serious consequences for breaking into someone’s home, but he questioned whether deadly force was necessary.
Authorities said Redfearn entered the residence alongside 19-year-old Maxwell Cook and 16-year-old Jake Woodruff. The homeowner’s son, who was inside the property at the time, reportedly confronted the intruders and shot all three.
Schumacher said his grandson had not previously been known as a troublemaker. He also questioned the level of force used, noting that the intruders were reportedly carrying items such as brass knuckles while the resident was armed with an AR-15-style rifle.
Following the shooting, deputies arrested 21-year-old Elizabeth Rodriguez, who was accused of acting as the getaway driver. Investigators said she admitted helping plan the attempted burglary.
The homeowner’s son was not charged. Authorities concluded that the available evidence indicated he had acted in self-defense while protecting himself and the residence.
Although Schumacher said he supported the right of people to own firearms and defend their homes, he believed there should be limits on how much force may be used against intruders.
He also acknowledged that the teenagers’ own choices led to the deadly confrontation. Schumacher said the families involved would have to live with the consequences for the rest of their lives and expressed hope that other young people would learn from the tragedy.
