A routine American Airlines flight from Dallas to Newark turned into a chaotic scene after a passenger allegedly became violent, forcing other travelers and crew members to restrain him with zip ties and duct tape.
The incident happened aboard American Airlines Flight 618 on September 3. The aircraft had departed Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport and was heading toward Newark Liberty International Airport when trouble reportedly began roughly two hours into the journey.
Disturbance Quickly Escalated
According to passengers who witnessed the incident, the man suddenly began shouting and arguing with another traveler seated near him. What initially appeared to be a verbal confrontation reportedly escalated within moments.
A flight attendant attempted to calm the situation, but witnesses said the passenger became increasingly aggressive and allegedly directed racist and anti-gay remarks toward the crew member.
The confrontation then reportedly became physical. Witnesses said the disruptive passenger struck another traveler and at one point appeared to grab the man around the neck.
Other passengers quickly realized the situation was becoming dangerous. A woman reportedly attempted to intervene before several male passengers stepped in to help the flight crew regain control.
Passengers Helped Restrain Him
With the disturbance continuing, crew members provided zip ties and duct tape that were used to secure the passenger to his seat.
Those who helped restrain him described a struggle as the man continued attempting to break free. Images and videos taken inside the aircraft later circulated online, showing the passenger tightly secured in his seat with tape wrapped around parts of his body.
Retired law enforcement officer Juan Mejia, who was traveling on the flight, was among the passengers who reportedly helped bring the situation under control. He described the change inside the cabin as extremely sudden, with a quiet flight becoming chaotic in a matter of moments.
Flight Diverted to Baltimore
Because of the disturbance, the pilots diverted Flight 618 to Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport instead of continuing directly to Newark.
Law enforcement officers were waiting when the aircraft arrived. The passenger, identified by authorities as 67-year-old Arizona resident Arthur Lundeen, was removed from the aircraft and taken into custody on state charges.
After the passenger was removed, the American Airlines flight was able to continue toward its original destination in Newark.
American Airlines Responds
American Airlines confirmed that the September 3 flight was diverted because of what the company described as a disruptive customer.
The airline said the safety of passengers and employees remains its top priority and emphasized that violent behavior aboard its aircraft will not be tolerated.
American Airlines also thanked its crew members for their professionalism while handling the highly unusual situation.
Federal Authorities Are Reviewing the Incident
The case may not end with state charges. The FBI has also been gathering information and interviewing people connected to the incident.
Federal investigators are expected to consult with prosecutors in Maryland to determine whether additional federal charges are appropriate.
